Robert Farber: A Retrospective, 1984-1995
June 3 - July 27, 2000

Robert Farber's development as a mature painter was confined to a period of just over 10 years. This retrospective presents the increasing intensity and poignancy of the works of this period; a process halted by his death in 1995 of AIDS related complications. The heart of the exhibition,The Western Blot Series (1991-94), is named after the most common testing method for the detection of HIV antibodies. The series of 22 mixed media panels explores the analogies between the Medieval experience of Black Death and the contemporary experience of the AIDS Crisis. Farber, in addition to his work as an artist, was a prominent figure among AIDS activists and an active member of the National Council of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS.

This exhibition originated at the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham MA, in 1997 and was made possible by the Robert D. Farber Foundation, New York NY.
