Eric Hongisto 1997, Painting
By using existing architectural walls and floors as my painting surface, I hope my murals and site-specific installations can reveal to a viewer that artwork is not necessarily an object; art can be an undefined space that gives a timeless theatrical experience. The word "fabric" can represent clothing we use to cover things. "Fabric," as a word, can also give form to the idea to the dimensionality of the Universe, space and time being inseparable components. In recent artwork, imagery is attempting to strand threads of lines; congregating, growing and revealing multiple layers of pictorial space. I enjoy the irony that a "Pair of Pants" is comparable to a Galaxy.

Recent paintings and murals are being further informed by my family's relocation to the coast of California. These pictures fresh off the easel hope to portray the space and light of San Francisco. And in the studio this week are simultaneous experiments: painted Styrofoam balls, oil monoprints, newspaper furniture -- I am always trying to allow the investigations to remain fun.
