undergraduate program : photography

Every photograph is a comment on contemporary culture. Exploring that comment is a primary focus of MECA’s photography program. Aesthetics, technique, and composition are discussed primarily in context of what the image communicates. The program, of course, isn’t all discussion. Students begin by using film and making black and white prints in a traditional darkroom. Guided by a faculty whose interests range from landscape photography to digital book arts and video, they proceed to courses in digital, color, large-format, lighting, and professional practices. But in all courses, the focus is on the content of individual photographs -- and the photographer’s intent.

Students prepare for the photography major by taking PH 101-102 in their first or second year.  PH 201 is recommended in the second year.  Majors take PH 201 (if not taken previously), PH 301, PH 302 and PH 303 in their junior year, and PH 401, PH 402 and PH 404 in their senior year.  PH 202 and PH 304 are strongly recommended, as is a digital course (PH 204 or PH 264).
