Adriane Herman, Associate Professor
Adriane Herman investigates consumption through appropriated imagery and media ranging from archival to edible. She is represented by Western Exhibitions in Chicago. Checking It Twice, her solo exhibition at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, monumentalized evidence of human intention toward action as manifested in grocery and other “to do” lists. Herman’s work has been included in exhibitions at myriad venues, including The Brooklyn Museum; The Dalarnas Museum (Falun, Sweden); Portland Museum of Art; Adam Baumgold Gallery (NY); Ulrich Museum of Art (Wichita); Whitney Artworks (Portland, ME.); International Print Center New York; and chosen barren land (Tainen, Taiwan). Her work has been collected by The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, The Progressive Corporation, Sprint, Hallmark, and The Walker Art Center, among others. She lectures widely about both independent and collaborative work and leads workshops exploring what we collect, why, and how it influences what we make as artists (and vice versa). Herman’s independent efforts to normalize consumption of fine art dovetail with collaborative curatorial efforts such as Slop Art dot com and projects undertaken with students and colleagues at Maine College of Art, such as “Long Overdue: Book Renewal,”which recycled hundreds of books, yielding 175 artworks temporarily collectible through Portland Public Library and Inter-Library Loan. Herman curated the 2010 exhibition Mind-Bending with the Mundane at MECA’s Institute of Contemporary Art.
In addition to media based classes and the Introduction to the Discipline seminar in the printmaking department, Herman also teaches Foundations of Digital Imaging and conceptually-based electives such as Alternative Delivery Systems; Gathering Influences: Collecting, Collections, Collectors, Collectibles; and Juxtaposition, Sequence, and Seriality.
