Both our undergraduate and graduate programs require an application. Our continuing and professional studies courses simply require registration.
MECA welcomes students to apply by the priority application deadline stated for each program. Each applicant is considered for merit based scholarships upon completion.
Each new student adds immeasurably to the vibrancy of our community. Applications are evaluated individually, with consideration given to the strength of the portfolio as well as academic achievement. Anyone graduating from high school or earning the equivalency may apply for admission.
MECA's community is as diverse and unique as each individual student. If you are currently enrolled at another college, you are welcome to apply and join our thriving population of transfer students. Students who are not presently in school or who are working full-time are also encouraged to apply, and applicants not seeking a BFA degree may apply for non-degree seeking student status. MECA encourages individuals, including international students, who will contribute to the diversity of its student body, to apply.
Bachelor of Fine Arts
Early Action Deadline: December 1, 2014. Students who complete by this date will have a decision rendered before the holiday break.
Priority Deadline is March 1, 2015. Students who apply by this date are eligible to compete in our full tuition scholarship.

To apply for admission as a full or part-time Bachelor of Fine Arts degree-seeking student, the following items must be submitted:
1. A completed application.
2. A non-refundable $40 application fee ($60 for international applicants).
3. A personal statement. The ability to write effectively and communicate clearly is essential to success in college. All applicants must submit a typed, 500-word essay addressing the question: Why art, Why MECA?
4. Official high school transcripts or official scored report of the General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Transcripts will be considered official if they arrive to MECA in an envelope that is stamped and sealed by the issuing institution. The applicant can deliver transcripts as long as they are in an unopened enveloped stamped and sealed by the issuing institution.
5. SAT/ACT scores are optional.
6. Official transcripts from each college or university attended, if applicable.
7. Two letters of recommendation, preferably from two of the following: art teacher, guidance counselor, current academic teacher, and/or employer.
8. A portfolio of 15-20 pieces of recent artwork. Ideally, some of these pieces should be done from direct observation of three-dimensional, live situations. Portfolios can be reviewed in person with your actual artwork during campus visits, Open Houses, portfolio days and high school visits. Portfolios can also be submitted digitally. Work can be submitted on disk as high quality jpegs, at least 800 x 600 pixels but no larger than 1024 x 768 pixels. Work can also be submitted electronically through SlideRoom.
Financial aid and merit-based scholarships are available, and over 90% of our students receive financial assistance. If you plan to apply for need-based aid, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), if you have not already done so. Master of Fine Arts

1. Complete the application.
2. A letter of intent of roughly seven-hundred and fifty words that describes the applicant’s intended field of exploration. The letter of intent should include an analysis of the applicant’s current work and goals for graduate study. Goals may include material, cultural, or critical contexts.
3. Up to twenty digital images or 10 minutes of video maximum via the online Slideroom application.
4. A full curriculum vitae (education, employment history, exhibitions, publications, honors, etc.)
5. Transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.
6. Two letters of recommendation written by individuals who can speak from direct experience about the applicant’s potential to thrive within a rigorous, cross-disciplinary graduate environment. Letters should address the candidate’s ability to work independently, to contribute to an intensive learning community, as well as the candidate’s artistic promise.
Some candidates may be interviewed by the Admissions Committee. Finalists may be required to make a presentation of their work to the Committee or submit additional written work as requested.
Accepted international students will need to complete the Declaration of Finances (DOF) form.

Master of Arts in Teaching
PRIORITY APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2015
The Master of Arts in Teaching Program at MECA is an accredited, state-approved full-time, ten-month program that blends the worlds of artist, educator and scholar. Students will gain an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of how artistic and educational skills intersect through the exploration of theories of artistic development and engagement in educational practices. Our courses reflect the most progressive approaches in the field.
Here at MECA we respect and value educators; we offer you the opportunity to work collaboratively with artists, community leaders, museum and art educators to develop a uniquely personal philosophy and practice of teaching, one in which you will be involved in service learning, community art and teaching in public, private and alternative K-12 schools. The program places a critical focus on contemporary visual culture, traditional arts and multicultural education. Preparing students to become effective artist-teacher-scholars is the aim of MECA’s art education program.
Successful completion of the program prepares teacher candidates to apply for certification in the State of Maine and with participating states and provinces who have signed interstate agreements. More information

4. Resume: A full curriculum vitae showing education, work experience and exhibition list.
5. Portfolio: up to 20 digital images or 10 minutes of film/video that is a representation of recent work with accompanying image list should include title, material, date and scale or duration. Portfolio can be reviewed in person, by submitting a CD, using Slideroom or linking to a website.
6. References: Teaching involves more than effective planning and instructional knowledge. Please select two references who can speak to your professional attitudes, beliefs and values - among them accountability, a sense of fairness, caring and integrity.
7. Official College Transcripts: of all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. BFA or BA in Art is required. 2.8 minimum GPA required in liberal arts courses, 3.0 minimum GPA in studio art required, 30 studio credits (evaluated on an individual basis), 12 art history credits (evaluated on an individual basis)
8. PRAXIS: It is strongly recommended that you take the Praxis I exams for reading, writing, math and the Praxis II exam for visual art. Passage of these exams is required for teacher certification in most states. For details visit: ets.org.praxis.
