MECA INTERNSHIP Q&A
Q: What is an internship?
A: The MECA Internship Program can help you get work-based learning experience you need to be competitive in your field.
Q: Why participate in an internship?
A: Field experience can be the determining factor in gaining a competitive edge in today's workplace. It is no longer enough to have a degree; you also need relevant work experience before you graduate. Internships give you the opportunity to network with leading employers in the community. An internship allows you to move beyond being a casual observer, and move into hands-on learning.
Q: How do I search for an internship?
A: There are a few ways to find an internship. Ask the faculty, search internships on MOJO, or propose a site. Contact Jessica Tomlinson at jtomlinson@meca.edu or 699.5016.
Q: When do most students do an internship?
A: Usually junior or senior year. (Fall, Spring and Summer) In some special circumstances a sophomore might take on an internship.
Q: What do I do once I secure an internship?
A: If you are using the internship for credit you want to fill out the Internship Contract and write a proposal. The Student Internship Proposal Forms packet is located on the MECA website. You will also need to find a faculty member who is willing to be your advisor throughout the internship.
Q: How do I secure the internship with the employer?
A: You and the employer will treat this like any job situation. There usually is a hiring process so look presentable and act professional during the interview and, if you are selected, throughout the internship.
Q: When is the paperwork due?
A: Like any class for credit, you must have completed paperwork before the add/drop deadline listed in the Academic Calendar. Your proposal should be turned in to the Internship Coordinator by this date.
Q: What next?
A: Your proposal will be reviewed by the Vice President of Academic Affairs & Dean of the College and the Internship Coordinator for approval. You will receive notification prior to the Add/Drop deadline.
Q: How long does the internship last?
A: The internship usually is the length of the semester – 15 weeks. In most cases the student has started their internship before finding out if it will be approved for credit.
Q: How many credits will I earn?
A: Each credit equals 3 hours of work per week for 15 weeks. To earn 3 credits you will need to work 9 hours a week for a total of 135 hours. In most cases the credits are placed in a studio elective.
Q: Will I get paid for my internship?
A: The employer is not required to pay the intern if they are earning college credit for the internship, but the College encourages that interns be paid for the services rendered.
