Sue Lennox is co-founder and co-CEO of Australia’s OzGREEN and a member of the Centre for Social Impact Advisory Council. She has 30 years of experience innovating environmental education and community building in urban, regional, remote, and indigenous communities in Australia, India, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Pakistan. In 2007, Sue was named as one of Sydney’s Top 100 Most Influential People by the Sydney Magazine.
The lecture will bet at 6:30pm on Friday April 19th in Osher Hall.
The workshop will expand upon the issues discussed in the lecture and will offer participants the opportunity to reflect upon their own gifts and potential actions around the issues of climate change. She will be doing a one day version of the Leading with the Heart Workshop described in this flyer: click here
Note: The workshop will be from 9am to 5pm on Sunday April 21st and will be free for MECA students faculty and staff and offered to community member by donation. Art for the As the director of Long Now, Alexander has facilitated projects such as the 10,000 Year Clock, The Rosetta Project, Long Bets, Seminars About Long Term Thinking, Long Server and countless others. Alexander shares several design patents on the 10,000 Year Clock with Danny Hillis, the first prototype of which is in the Science Museum of London. His experience also includes serving as an artist in residence at Silicon Graphics Inc., a project manager for Shamrock Communications, and a founding partner of Inertia Labs. Alexander has attended the Art Center College of Design and graduated with a bachelor of arts honors degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Industrial Design in 1995.
A Day With The Public Engagement Department Scott Berzofsky is a recent SMACT graduate from the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology. His work explores the relation between art, ecology and urban spatial politics. Before coming to MIT, Scott lived and worked in Baltimore, where he co-organized several artistic and activist initiatives including campbaltimore, Participation Park, The City from Below and STEW. His writing has appeared in Third Text, Critical Planning and The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest.

Leanna Morris Materials and Process Leeanna Morris is currently in her first year of the MECA MFA program. She earned a BFA in Studio Art concentrating in photography and a minor in Art History from Southern Methodist University (SMU). After graduating Leeanna was a Studio Resident in ceramics at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts. In her work, she is currently exploring ideas of installation and limitation through materials and process. She works in a variety of mediums, ranging from photography, ceramics, fibers, and drawing.

Portland, ME ~ The Bank of Maine proudly presents Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey opening on Friday, October 5, 2012, and continuing through December 29 on display at Portland Public Library’s Lewis Gallery. The exhibition is free of charge to the general public and features original illustrations, preparatory sketches, unpublished drawings and ephemera by the internationally celebrated artist and author Edward Gorey. This highly acclaimed exhibit is made possible by generous support from The Bank of Maine and a collaboration between Maine College of Art (MECA) and Portland Public Library. Elegant Enigmas pays tribute to the work of Edward Gorey (1925 – 2000), best known for his brilliant drawings and witty, quirky stories. Described as “incredibly sophisticated…stylish and inventive” by the New York Observer, Gorey’s signature pen-and-ink illustrations and macabre wit has led him to be considered one of America’s most imaginative and eccentric artists of all-time. During his lifetime, Gorey published over 100 works, designed sets and costumes for countless theatre productions, created popular animations, and illustrated works for a wide array of artists ranging from Charles Dickens and John Updike to Virginia Woolf and H.G. Wells. Elegant Enigmas includes approximately 180 original works, including selections from The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Doubtful Guest, The Unstrung Harp, The Gilded Bat, and other well-known publications, drawn primarily from the extensive archives of The Edward Gorey Charitable Trust and significant private collections. The Maine Center for Creativity, in ground-breaking collaboration with the Sprague Energy Corporation, sponsored the Art All Around® project. It is a bold initiative launched in 2008 to spearhead an international design competition. It’s goal: to transform 16 oil storage tanks on Portland harbor into an integrated ‘canvas’ of color and design at the gateway to the state’s largest city – and to all of Maine. The first phase was an open design competition that received 560 submissions from 80 countries. Designs were evaluated by a select, international panel of judges. Five semifinalists, including two from Maine, each received a $10,000 prize award. Jaime Gili, a young Venezuela-born artist living in London, was selected as the final winner – and received the $20,000 grand prize.
To date, five tanks of the 16 tanks have been completed, and Gili is visiting Maine to talk about the project, his inspiration, and how it compares to his other artistic endeavors. About Jaime Gili Jaime Gili was born in Caracas in 1972 and lives in London. His work has been described as continuing a tradition of Latin American abstract art, especially the Venezuelan optical artists from the 20th Century. Critics have described his work as a mix of Pop, Minimalism, Vorticism, Futurism and graffiti Art. Gili received his MA in painting from the Royal College of Art in 1998, after studying in Caracas and Barcelona, and has exhibited since in the UK, the USA, Brazil, Switzerland, Spain, Argentina and Venezuela. Art All Around® jurors selected Gili’s work from among 560 submissions from more than 80 countries during the Maine Center for Creativity’s international competition to transform the Sprague industrial site into the world’s largest public art painting. Each summer, MECA invites visiting artists, curators, and scholars to participate in MFA curriculum. In addition to critiques and studio visits with students, Visiting Artists deliver a lecture that is free and open to the public. Lectures are held in Osher Hall and begin at 6:30pm. Michael Kimmelman Michael Kimmelman’s talk is an intimate and story-filled reflection on his path from The New York Times’s Chief Art Critic, trawling the world’s museums and galleries to Foreign Correspondent (based in Berlin), reinventing cultural reporting from Marseille to Gaza to Berlin and Istanbul, all of which prepared the way for his current post as Architecture Critic, writing about issues facing us at a time when society and cities are rapidly changing. Beth Lipman Beth Lipman lives and works in Sheboygan Falls, WI. She has exhibited her work widely and received numerous awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship, and a Ruth Chenven Foundation Grant. Lipman has exhibited her work internationally at such institutions as the ICA at MECA, the RISD Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Radcliffe Bailey Radcliffe Bailey creates his mixed media paintings by piecing together ancestral photographs, collected objects, and painted words and maps. Born in 1968 in New Jersey, Bailey now lives and works in Atlanta. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Atlanta College of Art in 1991. His work is permanently installed in the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and in numerous permanent collections including The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The High Museum of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago. Amze Emmons Amze Emmons is one of the co-founders of Printersting.org. He is an artist, illustrator, curator, living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Currently, he teaches art at Muhlenberg College in Allentown. Emmons and his partners at Printeresting are organizing a zine and small press exposition at Space Gallery from July 20 - August 23 featuring work from 60 talented artists, designers, and publishers from around the world. Stanya Kahn California-based Stanya Kahn is an interdisciplinary media artist. Working primarily in video, with a practice that includes performance, writing, and photography, Kahn's work inhabits a space between fiction and document, and stems from an extensive background in live performance. Kahn has worked in a collaborative team with artist Harry Dodge, and her work has shown in numerous venues nationally and internationally, including the Whitney Biennial, the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art. Francis Cape Francis Cape was trained as a woodcarver before receiving his MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London. He has exhibited his work extensively in the US, including shows at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art. Cape is represented by Murray Guyin New York City. He lives and works in Narrowsburg, NY. Denise Markonish Denise Markonish is the curator at MASS MoCA where she has curated the exhibitions of Nari Ward, Petah Coyne and Inigo Manglano-Ovalle. Markonish also co-edited with Susan Cross the book Sol LeWitt: 100 Views. Previous to her work at MASS MoCA, Markonish was the curator at Artspace in New Haven, CT. Anne Wilson Anne Wilson is a Chicago-based visual artist who creates sculpture, drawings, performances and video animations that explore themes of time, loss, private and social rituals. Wilson is the recipient of grants from the Driehaus Foundation, Artadia, the Tiffany Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Wilson's work is represented by Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago and Paul Kotula Projects, Detroit. She is a Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Visiting Artist Lecture: Robin Mandel Robin Mandel is an artist working in sculpture, installation, and photography. His works use motion, light, and shadow to tread the line between material and immaterial. He has received grants from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the St. Botolph Club Foundation in Boston, and residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA. His teaching credits include the Rhode Island School of Design, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art in 2007-2008. Faculty Lecture: Stephen Schiffman Stephen Schiffman is Visiting Faculty of Creative Entrepreneurship at Maine College of Art for the 2011-12 Academic Year. He is on sabbatical from the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, where he most recently served as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Olin. Prior to that, from 1986 to 2002, Steve was a faculty member at Babson College, where he also served as Dean of the Undergraduate Program there from 1994-2002. Faculty Lecture: Claude Caswell Faculty Lecture: Adam Manley Adam Manley received his BA in International Relations and Political Science from The State University of New York at New Paltz, and his MFA in Furniture Design and Woodworking from San Diego State University. He currently teaches in the Woodworking & Furniture Design program at MECA.

Cat Mazza is a new media artist whose work explores the relationships between craft, digital technology and labor. She will give a free visiting artist lecture at 12:30 in Osher Hall on February 28. She has shown her work in galleries and museums internationally including the Jönköpings läns Museum, (Jönköpings, Sweden), the Museum of Arts and Design (New York City), the Triennale de Milano (Milan, Italy), Garanti Gallery (Istanbul, Turkey), The Museum of Contemporary Craft (Portland, Oregon) and new media festivals Futuresonic (Manchester, England), FILE (São Paulo, Brazil), Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), and the Influencers (Barcelona, Spain). Mazza has received support from Creative Capital (2008 grantee in Film/Video), Rockefeller Media Arts (New Media fellow 2007), the Craft Research Fund (2009) and MacDowell Colony (2009). She received her MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2005), her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University (1999) and has been an Assistant Professor of Art at UMass since 2007. | |

Art History faculty member Gan Xu will deliver a lecture, "Art Historian to Designer: My 390 Foot Buddha" on December 1 at 1pm in Osher Hall. Dr. Gan Xu was born in Shanghai, China. He studied art history at Xian Academy of Art, Xian, China, Vanderbilt University, and Ohio University. His research and publications focus on contemporary art in the West and in China. He has published two books and more than thirty articles in exhibition catalogs and magazines. He lectures nationally and internationally, and has taught as a visiting professor at Eastern China Normal University, Sichuan Academy of Art, China, and Langzhou University, China. He brings students overseas to study in China, Japan, Italy and France. Dr. Xu is also a painter and has been exhibiting his work since the 1970s. He teaches Chinese calligraphy and ink painting. His most recent title in China is the Art Director of an architecture firm, Linkhigh Interior Design, and has been involved in large scale architectural projects in China. Maine College of Art welcomes Visiting Artist Sarah Pierce back to her homestate of Maine for a lecture on Saturday, December 3 at 6pm in Osher Hall. Since 2003, Pierce has used an umbrella term, The Metropolitan Complex, to describe her practice which uses archives, exhibitions, and papers–often opening these structures up to the personal and the incidental. Sam Messer will deliver a visiting artist lecture on November 17 at 6pm in Osher Hall. Messer is Associate Dean and Adjunct Professor at the Yale University School of Art. He received a B.F.A. from Cooper Union in 1976 and an M.F.A. from Yale University in 1981. He is represented by Nielsen Gallery, Boston, and Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Los Angeles. His work may be found in public collections throughout the country. MECA welcomes visiting artist Alicia Eggert on October 27 at 2pm for a free public lecture. Eggert is an artist working primarily in sculpture, installation and time-based media. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from Drexel University in Philadelphia, studied Scandinavian architecture and design in Denmark, and worked at an architectural firm in New York for several years before pursuing a career in art. She received an MFA in Sculpture/Dimensional Studies from Alfred University in 2009. Since then, her work has been shown at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center in Buffalo, and at institutions in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle, Portland (Maine and Oregon), and elsewhere. Phil Goldberg will give a talk about his new book, just out from Doubleday, "American Veda: From Emerson and The Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West". This will be a fun talk about Goldberg's look into the popular history of how Hinduism has influenced American culture, in the past and right now. The talk will be followed by a book signing. Artist Sara Singh will screen her documentary "The Sky Below" in Osher Hall on April 7 at 3:30pm. The film is a contemporary exploration of the creation of Pakistan and the 1947 Partition of the Indian Subcontinent. weaving together 5000 years of culture, while investigating the lingering after-effects of this six-decade old political divide, most tragically witnessed by Kashmir. Visiting Artist Ellen Driscoll will give a free pubic lecture on March 11 at 6pm in the ICA at MECA. Driscoll's sculptures, drawings, and installations explore resource consumption and material lineage. Her latest multi-part, multi-year project, FASTFORWARDFOSSIL highlights the relationship between water and oil consumption and was displayed at the Smack Mellon Gallery in Brooklyn, NY and Frederike Taylor Gallery, New York, NY. Driscoll's previous work includes installations such as “The Loophole of Retreat” (Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris), and “Passionate Attitudes” (Threadwaxing Space, New York), public art projects such as “As Above, So Below” for Grand Central Terminal, a suite of 20 mosaic and glass works for the tunnels at 45th, 47th and 48th streets, “Catching the Drift”, a women’s restroom for the Smith College Museum of Art, and “Aqueous Humour”, a kinetic sculpture for the South Boston Maritime Park. Driscoll has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Anonymous Was a Woman, the LEF Foundation, and Radcliffe’s Bunting Institute. Daniel Rozin Daniel Rozin’s interactive mirrors combine an extraordinary range of materials, from wooden pegs to woven prints, to custom software and projection. The act of engaging one’s own slowly articulating image in Rozin’s work responds to the inherent nature of self-perception as performative, fascinatingly abstracted, and fleetingly resolved. Daniel Rozin is the recipient of numerous awards including the Prix Ars Electronica, I.D. Design Review, and the Chrysler Design Award. Rozin is a professor and the Director of Research at ITP in the Tisch School Of The Arts at New York University, where he earned an MPS. Previous teaching positions include the Jerusalem Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, where he also earned a BA in Industrial Design. MECA invites artists, curators, and scholars to the College to meet with students in classrooms and critiques. In addition, visiting artists are asked to deliver a lecture. These artist talks are free and open to the public.
