Each year, the D.L. Geary Brewing Company sponsors a contest for the undergraduate students at Maine College of Art to design the label and packaging for the Summer Ale. The winner receives $5000 and their artwork on nearly 1 million bottles of beer. This year’s winner is Annie Mora, a Graphic Design junior from South Londonderry, Vermont.

“When thinking of a design for the Summer Ale I wanted to illustrate the energy of the ocean. The inspiration for the splash came from watercolor paintings that I do in my sketchbook. The colors in the packaging represent warm summer days in Maine,” says Mora.

Maine College of Art will hold the 16th annual Art Honors gala celebration in the Porteous Building to recognize leaders in Maine’s creative sector on Tuesday, May 8, 2012.

This year, the College presents the Award for Leadership in Art Philanthropy to
S. Donald Sussman and the Award for Leadership in Community Service in the Arts and Education to Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.

About the Honorees
The Award for Leadership in Art Philanthropy goes to S. Donald Sussman for his deep and far reaching support of cultural programs and institutions within Maine and nationally.  The honor allows the College to pay tribute to Sussman’s personal belief that the arts play an important role in our civil society and acknowledges his encouragement of emerging and living artists.

The Award for Leadership in Community Service in the Arts and Education recognizes Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. for his deep and long-term commitment to Maine’s cultural heritage.  Shettleworth’s dedication and attention to the preservation of our State’s architecture—firmitas, utilitas, venustas—encompasses the same values embedded in MECA’s curriculum, where students consider the ideas of durability, utility and beauty within their work.

Art Honors recognizes artists, philanthropists and art educators with significant ties to Maine who offer MECA’s students, as well as the public, powerful examples of lives in the arts. Past honorees have included David Driskell, Bernarda Shahn, Beverly Hallam, Will Barnet, Neil Welliver, Alex Katz, Robert Indiana, Alison Hildreth, Angela Adams and Pandora Lacasse, among others.
