Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) invites applications for the position to teach Textiles & Fashion Design (TFD) courses in the MECA&D Summer Pre-College program from July 12 - August 2, 2025. Please note that this application is only for the Summer Pre-College program, not the Textile & Fashion Design BFA program.
POSITION SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position includes teaching two sections of the Textile & Fashion Design course in the MECA&D Summer Pre-College program in Summer 2025. Pre-College is a three-week program for current high school students that is designed to help students discover the undergraduate student experience at Maine College of Art & Design. During Pre-College, students develop their admissions portfolio and language for artistic critiques, earn college credits, make friends with peers from around the country, and work alongside fantastic professional artists and designers. Students in the Textile & Fashion Design Pre-College program study professional sewing techniques, intro-level design skills, and garment construction. Responsibilities include course planning, teaching, grading student work, and ensuring the safe and professional use of studio equipment and tools.
Individualized attention and effective teaching are hallmarks of a MECA&D education; therefore, a palpable engagement in pedagogy with a focus on continually improving the learning environment is required.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Textiles, Fibers, or Fashion is preferred; however, candidates with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and relevant professional and teaching experience will also be considered. To meet the immediate needs of the Pre-College program, candidates must have demonstrated expertise in sewn garment construction, basic pattern drafting, and knowledge of textile properties. This is an in-person teaching position located in Portland, ME.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate or high school teaching, with an understanding of historical traditions and contemporary practices in Textiles and Fashion Design.
- Professional expertise in apparel construction techniques and industrial and specialty sewing equipment.
- A commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.
- Strong ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues and students.
- Proficiency in maintaining a safe and professional studio environment, including overseeing student use of equipment and tools.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Compensation is $4000.00 for the program.
- This position is not benefits-eligible.
