MAT 4+1 Pathway

Description

Maine College of Art & Design’s 4 + 1 BFA / Art Education Accelerated MAT (4+1 pathway) enables a streamlined pathway for students to earn their Bachelor of Fine Arts in four years and their Masters of Arts in Teaching in one year, qualifying students to be certified to teach Visual Art in K-12 public schools in five years with no lapse in matriculation status.

Students indicate they would like to be enrolled in the track at the point of admission. By maintaining a specific GPA, taking a required Art Education class, and fulfilling a few other requirements, students are granted placement into the Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Plan Requirements

  • Students indicate they want to be enrolled in the track at the point of admissions.*
  • Current students may initiate the process of 4+1 pathway by enrolling into the AE 329 course, available for third and fourth year students every fall, or more based on student demand/interest.
  • Once in the track, students must:
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above each academic year in the BFA program
  • Take AE 329 Contemporary Practices for Art Teaching or its equivalent as a BFA student and receive a B+ or better in the class.
  • Receive two disposition checklists from Maine College of Art & Design faculty in the fall of the student’s senior year.
  • Have an interview with the Chair of MAT & Graduate Admissions Coordinator and receive “Permission to Proceed” in the fall of their senior year of the BFA program.
  • Students who meet and maintain the above criteria are automatically matriculated into the MAT program.
  • Students formally reserve their spot through a deposit.

*Transfer students and current students with less than 75 credits can enroll in the track if they meet the above requirements.
