Salt – Academic Policies

Credit Requirements for the Salt Certificate

Students are required to take 16 credits for the semester. Permission from the Chair and the Dean of the College is required for students to enroll part-time. Part-time is considered 12 hours or less in Salt.

General Salt Credit Distribution

16 Credits over One Semester

  • SALT 615 Radio & Podcasting (12 Credits) or SALT 618 Short Film (12 Credits) or SALT 619 Writing (12 Credits)
  • SALT 640 The Salt Workshop (4 Credits)

GPA Requirements

Graduate students shall maintain a 3.0 (B) GPA or higher, satisfying all course requirements as stated in course syllabi. In order to graduate, a student must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) or above, completed 16 graduate credits, and successfully presented work at the Salt final show.

Academic Probation and Dismissal

A student may be placed on academic probation by the Salt Chair while the semester is in progress if the student has failed to do the minimum amount of work required, has goals or working methods that are inconsistent with the program design and purposes, or has failed to meet the qualitative standard of performance reasonably expected at the graduate level. In some circumstances the Chair may issue a written warning in advance of the end of the semester alerting students to the above. In rare circumstances a student may be dismissed from the program.

Appeal

Students who are dismissed from Salt have the right of an appeal. Appeals follow the process articulated under Academic Sanctions/Appeals except that Salt students have 5 business days from their notification of dismissal to appeal.

Salt Graduation Requirements

The Salt Graduate Certificate in Documentary Studies is awarded to students who have:

  • Earned at least 16 credits (according to the curricular distribution requirements) with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of not less than 3.0,
  • Submitted all their assignments as part of a final portfolio;
  • Labeled and submitted their digital work for inclusion in the Salt Archive;
  • Successfully participated in the Salt final show.
  • Completed all requirements within the parameters of Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Completed a Financial Aid Exit Interview (for students receiving federal loans).
  • Satisfied all financial obligations to Maine College of Art & Design.
  • Returned all books to the Joanne Waxman Library (even if they are not overdue).
  • Returned all equipment borrowed from the College.
