This webpage is designed to simplify the Master of Arts in Teaching at Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) as much as possible with accessibility in mind.
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The MAT program is a ten-month graduate degree in art education. Ideal MAT students should have a broad art practice and an interest in teaching art to children.
Timeline
The MAT program runs once a year. All students start in the summer (July), continue into the fall (August) and graduate in spring (May).
Applicants can apply starting September 2024. We will accept applications as late as June 2025.
Classes begin July 2025.
Teaching Certification
Anyone who wants to teach in the public school system must have a teaching certification.
The MAT program is an Approved Teacher Prep Program by the Maine Department of Education. Our MAT students graduate with a degree and a certification to teach in Maine.
You can use your Maine certification to obtain certifications in other states.
BFA/Art Education 4+1 pathway
Students in MECA&D’s undergraduate program can apply for the 4+1 pathway.
The pathway makes it easy for graduating seniors to be admitted and enrolled into the MAT program.
Apply to the MAT program
A complete application for the MAT program consists of:
