Doug Scott will tell the story of his interest in collecting design examples and sharing these things in exhibits since 1968, when he was a student of architecture. While working for 35 years at WGBH television and radio, Doug installed monthly exhibits outside the design department, which generated much interest from the 1100 people who worked at WGBH. This work helped the in-house clients understand what the design team did.

At RISD in 2001, Doug asked the provost if he could take over large display cases in the Design Center, if he promised to keep them full of interesting and inspirational things that related to RISD departments – graphic design, industrial design, illustration, furniture, and architecture. Doug now has control of three venues there, and also the display cases at Northeastern University.
Doug is an advisor to the RISD Fleet Library Archive of Graphic Design and Illustration, and has both curated and designed exhibits in the library cases, as well as the graphic design Commons Gallery. For all the RISD and Northeastern shows, he designs posters and other promotional material, which he will share in this talk.
In 1999 Doug was asked to teach a design history course at MECA&D on Saturdays. He was a teacher for the Maine summer program, participated in Design Inquiry several times, and also was a board member. Overall Doug has lectured, run workshops, and has been a visiting critic at MECA&D and its summer programs about 15 times, since the late 90s.
This event is free and open to the public on a space-available basis.
