Joel Tsui '16, Salt '17, MFA '19

Joel Tsui is an artist and documentarian based in Portland, Maine. An alumnus of MECA&D’s MFA program, The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, and AICAD’s New York Studio Residency Program, his practice spans photography, sound, sculpture, and writing. His work has been shown at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA&D, the Camden International Film Festival, and the New England Graduate Media Symposium.

Maine’s leading art documentarian, Joel’s photographs have appeared in Forbes, e-flux, Boston Art Review, Sculpture Magazine, and more. He has provided documentation for North Optical, which was recognized as America’s Finest Optical Retailer for 2024 by INVISION Magazine, while his work on MECA&D’s Project Project (2020) won Gold in the Experimental Project category from Maine Ad + Design.

In addition to teaching, Joel is the Graduate Admissions Coordinator at MECA&D, an avid harmonica player, and co-facilitates digicam.love, the largest online community for early-2000s digital camera photography.
