Sophie Olmsted is an artist-educator and ceramicist who believes that community-based creative practices can lead to personal and collective wellbeing. Based in Portland, Maine, she currently serves as Curriculum Director and Ceramics Instructor at Portland Pottery, where she oversees all educational programming and teaches students of all ages.
Sophie earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Maine College of Art & Design and her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Bates College. Her professional experience spans public schools, higher education, community arts organizations, and summer arts programs. She has taught ceramics, drawing, photography, math & science, and art history to learners ranging from elementary school to adult students. She taught the Junior Seminar course at the Maine College of Art & Design, where she helped undergraduate artists connect their studio practice to the contemporary art world through coursework focused on professional development, critical thinking, and artistic critique.
From her teaching philosophy, Sophie writes, "Art-making can be a vulnerable experience. The relationship between student and teacher is foundational for building the courage and safety necessary for learning. I prioritize connection and conversation because students are most willing to experiment, question, and grow when they know they belong." She sees the classroom as a space where students can practice not only artistic skills but also life skills: observation, resilience, communication, collaboration, and self-reflection. She believes that meaningful learning happens when students feel seen, supported, and empowered to take creative risks. She is also passionate about place-based learning and community engagement. Throughout the various contexts of her career, she has always looked for collaboration - with museums, local artists, nonprofit organizations, and community partners. Incorporating more voices and perspectives creates more meaningful and authentic learning experiences for her students.
As both an artist and educator, Sophie is always learning alongside her students. She approaches teaching with curiosity, humility, and routine self-reflection to consider both what works and imagine new ways to create engaging and inclusive learning environments.
